Toos is the face behind Bakkerij Toos (Toos Bakery), a popular neighborhood bakery where customers come not only for fresh bread and pastries, but also for the friendly chat and personal atmosphere. Toos started doing business early on: from a hair salon and model agency to eventually her own bakery.
After fourteen years of paid employment, entrepreneurial blood started to itch again. When a friend asked her to start a bakery together, she decided to go for it, with full conviction.

The challenge

The first few years as an entrepreneur were intense. “Work hard and decipher yourself,” says Toos. “The bakery grew, but a lot also came at me: staff, taxes, unexpected costs. And during corona, it all became even harder.” When her partner decided to quit, Toos had to take over her share. At the same time, she wanted to renew the terrace and make much-needed investments, such as a new dishwasher and cake cooling.
However, the bank proved to be unflexible: long waiting times, a lot of paperwork and little understanding of its situation. “I didn't have time to wait for months. In a bakery, you have to go on every day.”

The objectives

Toos especially wanted peace and stability create in her company. The takeover of her partner had to go smoothly, the store had to be able to keep running and overdue accounts had to be eliminated.
In addition, she wanted to keep investing in quality and convenience; for herself, her team and her customers. “I just wanted to enjoy my business again, without constant financial stress.”

The challenge

Founder Joris Slagter watched with sadness how the most talented teams were disbanded when a startup was unable to survive. He then put together his own talent team. Swishfund helped him gain financial leeway.

Today, Toos runs her bakery with pride and passion. She enjoys the contact with her customers and the friendships that have developed as a result. And she is clear about the future: “My dream is to quit at 63 and move with my husband to Spain somewhere on the coast. But until then, I'll keep baking with love.”
